Hey y'all, welcome to Backwoods Bites! My name is Kayla and I live in east Tennessee, close to the Smoky Mountains.
My intentions with this blog hold something near and dear to me. I am on a mission to keep the traditional, passed down Appalachian recipes alive. As you might know, those people who have those types of recipes don't tend to write them down (I understand why!), and I want to change that by passing around the ones that I know, have sought out (online and from my own family), and even give some of my own spins on some of the recipes that focus on being affordable/budget friendly.
There's been many times where I have been scouring the internet looking for something like what my Nanny (my grandmother) made when I was growing up, and kept coming up empty handed. So, I decided to get some recipes from her and she delivered quite generously. She even handed down some recipes from passed on family members that she enjoyed and made as well.
My Nanny has since passed away and this is one way for me to connect her love for food, giving, and keeping her spirit alive through it - while also sharing it with the world, just as she would have.
She was also big on 'making things your own' and that's part of why she didn't keep many recipes written down. Plus, she made them often and she just remembered them that well! I'm also a big believer in that same mentality and that's why you won't always see measurements on recipes.
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you find something tasty, interesting, or inspiring!
